    Default ExxonMobil Mastercard

I have this card. I applied for it because I have tons of Mobil stations here in the Chicagoland (GO BEARS!) area.

It only pays 3% on ExxonMobil gas. I know other cards pay 5%, but that did not seem important when I applied for it. It looked kind of cool, so I thought why not?

I already called Citibank, and they cannot combine it with anything else, or product-trade it.

Can anybody think of why I should use this card? I also have AMEX Blue, Shell MC, and Chase Freedom.

I would suggest the Discover Gas Card. It pays 5% cash rebates for gas you buy at any station. The only thing you have to be aware of is that you can only earn 5% for up to $1,200 in annual gas spending. If you spend less than , you will be ok.

But I see that you also have the Blue Cash. So if you have reached the $1200 limit on discover, then switch to the blue cash for gas.

If you decide to use just the blue cash, you have to bear in mind that the blue cash requires you to spend over $6500 before you earn 5% on gas, supermarkets and drugstores. Before that, you earn 1%.

I would get the Discover Gas and use it together with the blue cash. Your chase freedom only lets you earn 3% rebates I believe. Why earn 3% on gas when you can earn 5%?

    Thanks, Janette.

I was thinking of Discover Gas. I was going to use it for car repairs, if necessary. Wouldn't this be a better use for it?

I would use it for both gas and auto repairs/maintenance.

    jannette:

AFTER I have exhausted the $1200 on Discover Gas and still BEFORE I have reached the $6500 tier on Blue Cash, would the ExxonMobil Mastercard, at 3% on ExxonMobil gas, then be a viable choice?

I also have BP Visa (5%) but BPs are not that bountiful (as Mobils are) in my neighborhood, although BP is great for dining and travel.

I think you should probably use the Mobil card simply because the stations are closer to your residence. It doesn't do you much good to use a card that doesn't match your convenience issues, unless you normally buy your gas where BP is easier to find.
