Default Which Backup to AMEX Blue?

I have the BP Visa, which I am debating converting to the Freedom card. I use AMEX BLue almost exclusively wherever I can. Only exception are Visa (as a backup), and the Discover "Get More" promotions, like the current one on restaurants.

The BP Visa gives 2% back on restaurants, 5% on BP gas, and 1% back on everything else. The Freedom card gives 3% back on your top three categories every month.

We eat out a couple of times weekly, and I buy all types of gas, including BP. Our top 3 spending categories are groceries, drugstores, and gas. But even when I am under the $6500 AMEX tier, I usually only use AMEX for gas, groceries, supermarkets to jump through the tier more rapidly. Plus, I do not want to confuse my wife with too many credit card spending permutations, and then change them when she gets used to them.

The Visa (whichever Visa) would be a backup for the AMEX for the few places where AMEX is not accepted.

We spend about $42,000 annually on credit cards. Last year about $37,000 went on AMEX.

Which Visa is a better backup for AMEX, in my scenario?

Also with discover checkout shop discover

by linking to sites listed in shopdiscover site and paying with your discover card, you get at least 5% back on things you order exlcuding tax, shipping etc some sites you can get more. 20% magazines.com FTD.com , 10% Barnes and Nobale , Sharper Image ,
most are 5% , but they also have many cruise lines that offer 5% , hotwire is on shop discover.
So if you can get want you want on shop discover ,it's real cash cow. normaly there is't a cap, except things like blue nile which sells diamonds only offers 5% back on orders of $12.5K or less

Also I like their secure account numbers, they genrate a virtual number linked to you real and they expire with your account , so they can be ued with recurring charges. the last 4 numbers are shown on your statement, so it you have a problem with one, you just call andthey deactivate it.

    Freddyg:

    Thanks!

Should I 'sockdrawer' the Discover, even for "Get More" promotions, and just put everything on AMEX Blue and Chase Freedom, just to make things even less complicated?

Or is Discovercard, and only for SOME 5% promotions (the ones that I can use, maybe 1-2 annually) really worth charging on a third card?
